Course Overview

We offer a 25-week English for Academic Purposes language course where learners will acquire the basic language and structures to be able to do things learners need to do on a daily basis as soon as possible. This forms a foundation of essential developing language skills for learners. This course includes a combination of English language tutorials, conversation classes, and social/cultural activities. On passing the level learners will receive an Academic IELTS & English Talks Certificate of Achievement. The course is designed for learners aged 18+ who want to use English accurately and fluently. Grammar and vocabulary are taught and explained thoroughly, and all four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are developed systematically. The course combines effective methods of language teaching with additional exercises, real interviews, pronunciation tips and a writing guide.

As part of this programme English Talks provides English for Academic Purposes classes (EAP) classes specifically tailored to university level expression and the discourse required to participate at third level. EAP comprises an advanced level of English language skill. EAP enables learners to participate successfully in their day-to-day studies at university level including oral presentations, written assignments, examinations and dissertation writing. EAP enables learners in the access and acquisition of the third level lexicon needed to elucidate these essential components.

This includes:

Utilising appropriate academic vocabulary
Structuring an academic assignment, including paragraph structure
Developing and strengthening academic arguments
Citations and referencing, paraphrasing and avoiding plagiarism
How to give an effective academic presentation
Oral and cooperative skills for group work and seminar discussions
Pronunciation and prosody
Effective use of spoken discourse markers
Intensive IELTS academic test practise and preparation
Engaging effectively and cooperatively with your peers.

As part of this course English Talks offers additional essential third level components:

Critical thinking skills
Study and communication skills
IT skills
Time management
Interview skills

Learning Outcome

During this course learners will be assessed in a formative manner with oral interviews and in a summative manner with in class progress tests which assess learners’ skills with a percentage result given at the end of each test. At the end of the academic year, learners will sit an external exam i.e. Academic IELTS. Specific exam preparation classes are included in the period of 25 weeks. On passing the exam successfully certification is provided with an English Talks Certificate of Achievement and Academic IELTS certificate.
